About Plumbing
Plumbing is the trade of installing and repairing pipes, tubing, fittings and plumbing fixtures for drinking water systems, gas and the drainage of waste. A plumber installs or repairs various plumbing fixtures such as toilets (also known as water closets), urinals, showers, bathtubs, water heaters, dishwashers, stoves, refrigerator, washing machines, dryers, instant hot water machines, utility and kitchen sinks, drinking fountains, ice makers, humidifiers and air washers. Plumbers also work with the waste drainage system of a house and sometimes are required to repair, clean or replace the houses' interior piping systems or lines running to the township piping. Pipes and fittings are usually made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), copper, ceramic, steel or cast iron. Modern plumbers routinely use PVC or copper piping due to the fact that they account for the majority of pipe materials used in buried municipal applications for both drinking water and wastewater. Plumbers are sometimes skilled in working with natural gas lines commonly found in houses. Plumbers can re-route gas lines within a house, install hot water heaters, stoves and dryers that utilize natural gas. Most plumbing work is regulated by government or quasi-government agencies due to the direct impact on the public's health, safety, and welfare. Plumbing installation and repair should be done in accordance with local plumbing and building codes. Plumbers often obtain any permits required for work from township authorities on behalf of a home-owner.
