About Eye Care and Optometry

Optometry is the measure of sight and is performed by an Optometrist. Like most health professions, optometry education, certification, and practice is regulated. Optometry is the science of measuring visual acuity to determine refractive errors of the eyes. Optometrists can also prescribe and fit appropriate corrective lenses in glasses on contact lenses. Certain occupations required a minimum level of vision, specifically those dealing with flying or driving various vehicles such as trains, heavy goods, buses, etc. Optometry school consists of four years of study focusing on the eye, vision, pharmacology and systemic diseases. Upon completion of optometry school, candidates graduate from accredited college of optometry and hold the Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree. Optometrists must pass a national examination administered by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry. Optometry is an essential part of a persons overall health. Doctors suggest that everyone receive an eye exam once every two years. Eye exams can include visual acuity tests as well as tests for color blindness.
