About Electricians

An electrician is a tradesman specializing in electrical wiring of houses, buildings and related equipment. Electricians can be used for the installation of new electrical items or the maintenance or repair of existing electrical systems or components. Residential electricians are usually hired to install, test, and maintain electrical systems in your home. Electricians are familiar with lighting and fuse boxes, telephone service, computer, cable, and fiber optic networks. Electricians can also be hired to install appliances. Due to the dangerous nature in dealing with electric current, most home owners require the services of a certified and licensed electrician for safety reasons. Many state and local rules and regulations exist to ensure safety. Like many trade professions, electricians are usually required to serve an apprenticeship lasting from 3 to 7 years under the general supervision of a Master Electrician and usually the direct supervision of a Journeyman Electrician. Schools also exist to teach electrical theory. Some common tools used by electricians are: Lineman's pliers, Diagonal pliers, Needle-nose pliers, Wire strippers, Cable cutters, a multimeter, screwdrivers, crimpers, hammers, reciprocating saws, drywall saws, metal punches, flashlights, chisels, adjustable slip-joint pliers, and drills.
