About Attorneys

An attorney is a person admitted to practice law in at least one jurisdiction and authorized to perform criminal and civil legal functions on behalf of clients. Some duties performed by attorneys include providing legal counsel, drafting legal documents, and representing clients before courts. The term attorney is synonymous with lawyer, counselor at law or Attorney at law. In most states, to become an attorney a person must receive a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school. Law school usually entails three years of full-time study. After Law school, a person must pass a bar examination of that state in order to be admitted to practice law. Certain discourse between attorney and client is protected by the attorney-client privilege. Lawyers can specialize in different areas of Law such as Criminal Law, Civil Law, Business Law and can specialize in defense attorneys or prosecuting attorneys. Defense attorneys and prosecuting attorneys are normally trial lawyers who represent clients and or states in a courtroom.
